6 Part-Time Jobs Good for Your Résumé and Your Major

Part-time jobs are a great way to add experience to your résumé and make extra money while you're in college. Here are some major-relevant jobs to consider!

If you’re considering adding a part-time job to your list of responsibilities, you’re not alone. Nearly half of full-time students and 81% of part-time students work while attending college. Doing so allows you to make new friends and help pay for tuition, room and board, food, and other expenses. However, a part-time job can also set you up for postgraduate success by strengthening your résumé. By choosing a job that complements your major, you can effectively gain real-world experience and grow your skill set while earning some extra cash. These on-the-job experiences will eventually help you land a high-paying job in your career field. As you search for a part-time position, keep the following options in mind.

1. Lifeguard

While becoming a lifeguard can help aspiring nurses and emergency responders grow their skill sets, any student can benefit from adding this job to their résumé. Being a lifeguard is a huge responsibility because it involves other people’s safety. You must be aware of your surroundings, take the lead at a moment’s notice, and work well with your team to save lives. Many employers look for these qualities in applicants, so it’s a good option if you’re looking for a part-time job this summer.

2. Camp counselor

If you love being outdoors but want to sharpen your communication skills for a future as a teacher, camp counseling is one of the best summer jobs to have on your résumé. In addition to working with kids, you’ll have many opportunities to showcase your creativity, leadership skills, and problem-solving abilities. This job is also a natural fit for anyone working toward an Environmental, Physical Education, or Arts Degree. Plus, it’s a service-oriented position that could score you a scholarship and will look impressive to potential employers.

3. Tutor

Future teachers looking for part-time jobs that complement their major should also look into tutoring positions at their university or local primary school. Special education and refugee centers are more wonderful places to practice your teaching skills in a one-on-one setting. Tutoring will teach you patience, communication, and listening skills—all of which will come in handy in the real world and will surely impress your future employers.

4. Restaurant server

You probably didn’t consider becoming a food server when brainstorming part-time jobs to put on your résumé. But waiting tables is an excellent way to improve your memory, sharpen your customer service skills, and learn how to multitask. Plus, you’ll make good money, earn free meals, make new friends, and stay active. If there’s room in your résumé or cover letter, share evidence of your ability to work as part of a team and be a leader in stressful situations.

If you love sharing new ideas and information with others and have a heart for history, a part-time job as a museum guide or presenter is right up your alley. This job will test your public speaking skills and turn you into a leader within weeks. Plus, if you’re preparing for a career in historical agencies, anthropology, conservation labs, or related fields, this job will certainly strengthen your résumé.

6. Bank teller

Are you studying to be an accountant, economist, or financial advisor? Consider becoming a part-time bank teller. You’ll gain experience with customer service, mental math, and data entry and learn how to answer account-related questions on the fly. You’ll also learn a thing or two about foreign currency, savings bonds, travelers’ checks, and money orders. Being able to recognize and prevent fraud is a good skill to have on a résumé for any job.

CollegeXpress has helped me with the college application process. The tips and tricks for important essays were so helpful. I also gained useful knowledge about college life. Even though I’m fully online, CollegeXpress has helped me develop a sense of how college is in person. The experiences from college students that were featured on their Instagram page have shown the good, the bad, and the “secret” life on campus from a reliable perspective. Not to mention, they relieved my feelings of anxiety about the workload. I can now understand how it can be stressful, but it takes self-control and willpower to get assignments completed on time and with quality.
