Video: Party Schools: Fact vs. Fiction

Even if a college has a "party school" reputation and that's not really your crowd, you should still consider it for the other great things it offers.

What if the school you want to attend has the reputation of being a “party school,” but that’s not really your crowd? Well, it shouldn't matter! Student vlogger Joe Y. explains why college is what you make of it, and you'd be surprised at how many "party schools" have an incredibly strong curriculum, passionate faculty and staff, and a beautiful campus too. Check out the video below!

What it’s really like to attend a party school

Joe goes to a university in California that has a reputation for being a “party school,” but he wants to reinvent stereotypes about both his school and those that are similar. Some students may be reluctant to attend a “party school,” but you should take other characteristics the school has to offer into consideration when making your final college decision.

Joe was nervous about freshman orientation because he was unsure if he would fit in or make friends based on rumors he heard about his school. However, after the first couple of weeks at his California university, he started to love everything the school offered and made great friends. Joe found that having a diverse student group, whether or not they attend parties, means he never gets bored!

The bottom line: college is what you make of it. You should always do research on the university (including going on a campus visit) and decide for yourself whether or not it is a right fit for you, as opposed to listening to rumors about what a school is like. Even if you decide to go to a “party school” and that’s not your crowd, rest assured that there are lots of other ways you can get involved with your school and have a great experience!

As a UK student moving to California due to my dad's job in the military, when I first signed up for CollegeXpress a few months ago, the college process ahead seemed daunting and incredibly stressful. That all changed after I started to explore what this website had to offer. Not only was I helped by the vast array of resources available to me, but through being a CollegeXpress member, there have been so many more benefits. There have been emails with college tips—all of which I found incredibly helpful—as well as invitations to events and notifications of scholarships that'll make college possible for me. Overall, I'm very grateful to CollegeXpress for all of these things and more. Not only have they helped me grow my understanding of the college process, but they've also helped me to grow as a person, giving me new skills that I can take with me through life.

Starting the college admissions process as an international student was daunting. Thankfully, CollegeXpress was the first website I used for that cause and it helped me so much, from knowing where to start to deciding what my next move would be. I'll take a gap year, but I’m certainly using the website again when applying for fall 2023.

CollegeXpress has helped me find so many scholarships that fit me. They match me to colleges I have specific interest in to make searching for colleges way easier and more efficient. CollegeXpress refers me to schools that have my major of interest and backup schools if I want to change my mind. CollegeXpress also gives out their own scholarships, so you have even more of a chance at gaining multiple scholarships. This website has helped me de-stress from the pressure of not being able to afford college, [of finding] what schools are right for me, and how to find easy access to scholarships that most people never knew existed.

CollegeXpress has helped me by opening my eyes to new opportunities. I learned about such easy ways to get financial help to achieve my dreams while also learning about myself and who I truly am. I know this isn't a very long explanation of what CollegeXpress has done for me, but nonetheless, I believe it's crucial to how I developed as a person throughout my time as a college student.
